Up to September 1996, 789 research projects had been carried out with the support of this fund. Of these projects, 416 were conducted by graduates, 374 by the Research-Development department and 27 were Rectorate infrastructure projects. In 1997, there were a further 72 Research-Development and 90 graduate projects. 1998 saw 57 more projects conducted by Research-Development and 53 by the graduate program.
In addition to already existing Research-Development, graduate program and Rectorate infrastructure projects, further programs exist which include:
The Young Researchers Support Program to give preliminary support to young researchers. The Multi-disciplinary Research Support program to encourage multi-disciplinary projects. The Defence Industry Research Support Program to motivate technological projects for Turkish defence.
The aim of ITU is to rank among leading universities globally. Consequently, ITU’s mission is to educate engineers, architects, social scientists, to be competitive not only in Turkey, but all over the world.
In the 226 years since its establishment in 1773 as "Mühendishane-i Bahri-i Hümayun", the Royal School of Naval Engineering, ITU has continually been able to project a modern identity due to its approach to education and research.
Programs of primary importance for the 21st century are those that will improve the quality of education and research. Projects which aim to restructure and improve the university, and to effectively educate and stimulate future scientists and technicians are now being implemented.
