Universities are institutions that create the cultural and social environment necessary for the youth to improve themselves. The ITU campuses, situated in the center of Istanbul, provide students with an opportunity to take part in the diverse cultural and artistic activities in the metropolis of Istanbul. On the Ayazağa Campus, a great number of sports facilities are available to the students in a pleasant, natural green area. Students can spend their spare time at the ITU Sports Union and the ITU Culture and Arts Union. There are 12 student clubs under the roof of the ITU Sports Union and 56 student clubs under the ITU Culture and Arts Union. The number of clubs increases every year and new clubs are opened as new interests arise among the students. Products of these club activities, such as exhibitions, concerts, sports contests and student festivals, bring a vivid atmosphere to ITU campuses every year in May.
There has been a remarkable increase in the participation of ITU students in international activities. An example is the membership in the AEGEE (European Students Forum). ITU students have been actively involved and have an important role in the administration of the Istanbul branch of this organization. Again as a part of the same project, an international summer school has been organized every summer since 1994.
Participation in International Contests: Another example of the activities where students take part in the international arena is the various vocational contests. CHAMP 93 and 94 are examples of these, tailored for the Management students, and there are also worldwide or continental contests designed for Petroleum Engineering students. ITU was ranked third in Europe in CHAMP 94. In the contest conducted among the Petroleum Engineering students, the winner in 1996 was a graduate of ITU, Petroleum Engineering Department.
IASETE and AIESEC: For their compulsory vocational training, ITU students benefit from organizations such as IAESTE and AIESEC as well as national institutions. IAESTE (the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience) was established in 1948, with Turkey joining in 1955. With 47 members worldwide, this association aims to provide students of higher education with an opportunity to carry out their vocational training in an international arena as well as to bring people from different countries and cultures together. IAESTE-Turkey has been a host for a great number of groups of trainees in the summer. ITU students also attach importance to keeping up to date and participating in vocational forums. To this end, they organize student congresses, vocational summer schools and symposia. In recent years, as a result of the agreements made between ITU and more than 60 foreign universities, there has been an increase in the number of summer schools, as more and more foreign students participate in these activities. Visiting students are accommodated in dormitories located on ITU campuses.
Sports
With the history of over 225 years, Istanbul Technical University has not only contributed to the welfare of our country by producing the highest standards in technical staff education, but it is also one of the leading institutions that places great emphasis on sports activities.
The volleyball areas in the courtyard that used to be in the middle of the campus in Gümüşsuyu in the 1930's was where some of the best volleyball players were trained. Since the launching of the Gümüşsuyu Sports Facility, the main interest has shifted to basketball. For a long time this facility has been available to all the residents of Istanbul, and a great number of champion basketball players have trained and practiced there.
"ITU Sports Club" was established in 1953. The Club is the only university team that competes in the Turkish Basketball League. In the ITU Sports Complex, students are able to play 25 different kinds of sports.
On the Ayazağa Campus, there is an indoor Sports Hall with a seating capacity of 1.500, 2 gymnasiums, 2 fitness centers, 2 table-tennis rooms, I open-air and 1 covered football pitch, 2 outdoor basketball courts, 4 outdoor tennis courts and an Olympic-size swimming pool (currently under construction).
In the campuses downtown, there are 2 indoor sports centers, 2 gymnasiums, a table tennis room, a fitness center, a carpeted football pitch, 2 tennis courts and an outdoor swimming pool.
Dormitories
Approximately 60% of the students at ITU come from cities outside Istanbul. Those students, and upon request also students who are residents of Istanbul, are entitled to live in the residence halls, which are operated by the ITU Rectorate and ITU Foundations. As of 1996, the ITU Rectorate has placed great importance on building high-standard halls, especially on the Ayazağa Campus. With the completion of the construction of the halls in 1997 and 1998, accommodation capacity has been markedly increased. Today, ITU now has an accommodation capacity of 2,930 -- housing 800 female and 2,130 male students. With the completion of construction of the Men's hall on the Ayazağa Campus, this number stands at a total of 4,730. The residence halls are all located on the campuses and within walking distance of school buildings.
