Istanbul Technical University

Chaired by the Rector, the University Senate consists of the Vice-Rectors, Deans, a faculty member from each faculty, who is elected by the Faculty Council for a term of three years, and the heads of affiliate departments, institutes and academies under Rectorate. The Senate functions as the academic arm of the university. It meets at least twice a year; once at the beginning of the academic year and once again at the end of the academic year. However, the Rector can call for additional meetings if he/she should deem it necessary.

The Senate is in charge of:

• Taking decisions on the guidelines concerning the tuition and scientific research and publication activities of the university.
• Developing draft laws and regulations that concern the university as a whole and submitting opinions there on.
• Drafting regulations concerning the university and/or its affiliated units with the objective of their enforcement after publication in the Official Gazette pending the approval of the Rector.
• Reviewing and finalizing the annual academic schedule and calendar of the university.
• Granting honorary academic titles not subject to any examination and finalizing the nominations by the department boards in this matter.
• Reviewing challenges to the decisions taken by the boards of the departments, institutes and academies and taking final decisions on such matters of dispute.
• Electing members to the University Administrative Board.
• Carrying out all the other activities bestowed upon them by law.
