TÜBİTAK Finalists on their Way to Ankara
İTÜ hosted for the 4th time the regional final of “TÜBİTAK Secondary School Student Project Contest” organized for the 46th time this year. In the İstanbul European Region Final attended by 180 students from 61 schools, the winners of the projects exhibited between 30 March – 1 April 2015 were announced in the award ceremony held on Thursday, 2 April. Regional finalists will compete in the great final to be held in Ankara.
‘The key to our age is entrepreneurship and innovation’
Vice-Rector Prof. İbrahim Özkol who acts as Coordinator of İstanbul European Region for TÜBİTAK Secondary School Students Research Contests made the opening speech of the award ceremony held on Thursday, 2 April in İTÜ Ayazağa Campus – Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center. Özkol mentioned that 745 applications in 10 separate branches were made in the European Region of the contest organized by TÜBİTAK in 12 different regions of Turkey and the ranking was determined according to points based on interviews from among 100 projects invited to İTÜ. Özkol, who emphasized that the key concepts of our age is entrepreneurship and innovation, advised the students to pursue and internalize these concepts.
‘Losing, making mistakes is the way to winning’
Rector Prof. Mehmet Karaca mentioned that every year he visited the exhibition and heard the projects from the students and met increasingly more impressive ideas and projects. Karaca noted that İTÜ supports realization and commercialization of projects and provides an environment conducive to entrepreneurship and said, “We are a university that makes dreams come true.” Karaca said that there are no losers in this contest and that advancing to the regional final is also a great success and gave Michael Jordan as an example and said that he started winning after missing thousands of shots. Karaca said, “What matters is learning and getting somewhere by making mistakes, being eliminated, attending competitions.”

After the speeches, the guests had a pleasant music break with a mini concert by İTÜ TMSC Prepatory Unit High School Stage Repertory Class, then they were excited about the awards.
