Graduation Excitement at the Maritime Faculty

2014 - 2015 Academic Year Graduation Ceremony of the Maritime Faculty was held on 1 July Maritime and Cabotage Day. New graduates of İTÜ were sent off with a ceremony that witnessed pride-giving scenes where the white met the blue.


The ceremony held at İTÜ Tuzla Campus was attended by Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Deputy Undersecretary Capt. Dr. Özkan Poyraz, Vice Rector Prof. Mehmet Sabri Çelik, Dean of Maritime Faculty Prof. Oğuz Salim Söğüt, HEAŞ General Manager Hasan Naiboğlu, SUNY Maritime Collage representative Kathy Olszewski, Maritime Faculty Alumni Association President Ahmet Baybora Yıldırım, representatives of non-governmental maritime organizations, İTÜ Faculty Members and the families of our graduates.


In the ceremony that started with Dean of the Faculty Prof. Oğuz Salim Söğüt’s leaving a wreath from Tuzla shore in memory of the national war of independence and the maritime martyrs; Deputy Undersecretary Capt. Dr. Özkan Poyraz, Vice Rector Prof. Mehmet Sabri Çelik, Dean Prof. Oğuz Salim Söğüt, SUNY Maritime Collage representative Kathy Olszewski, Maritime Faculty Alumni Association President Ahmet Baybora Yıldırım and the top student of the term Ali Volkan Sözen, on behalf of the graduates, each made a speech.


After the speeches, oath-taking ceremony took place. Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering Department Acting Chair Assist. Prof. Cemil Yurtören and Marine Engineering Department Chair Assoc. Prof. Cengiz Deniz administered the oaths. After the pennant handover ceremony, Ali Volkan Sözen who graduated as the top student of the faculty hammered a memorial plaque to the age log.


A total of 121 students graduated from the faculty 73 (8 from international dual diploma program) of which are from the Department of Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering and 48 (2 from international dual diploma program) from the Department of Marine Engineering.


The ceremony finished with colorful moments of throwing the caps in the air and the graduates throwing each other to the sea.
