Alumni of ITU Maritime Faculty Meet at 131st Fish Day

Traditional Fish Day celebrating the 131st anniversary of Turkish maritime education and the 23rd anniversary of the ITU Maritime Faculty (ITUMF) was held this year.

The 131st “Fish Day” event, organized by ITU Maritime Faculty Alumni Association (DEFAMED) on 12 December 2015, brought together the faculty alumni.


The ceremony, accompanied by the trumpet perfrormance by the “Anlamlı Destek” group, was attended by the ITU Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca, the Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication Binali Yıldırım, government authorities and guests. Binali Yıldırım also visited the faculty exhibition and met with the students before the ceremony. The Minister was very impressed by the stand featuring an “Unmanned Surface Vehicle” designed and constructed by the ITU Maritime Faculty students. Binali Yıldırım studied the vehicle carefully and asked students various questions.

The ceremony opening speech was delivered by the Dean of the ITU Maritime Faculty Prof. Dr. Oğuz Salim Söğüt. “As you all know our High Maritime School and the ITU Maritime Faculty raise generations devoted to traditional, national and moral values as well as to Ataturk’s Revolutions and respectful to the Turkish flag and its nation. And we as the ITU Maritime Faculty will always preserve these values”, said Prof. Dr. Oğuz Salim Söğüt.

Afterwards the 4th year student of the Maritime Faculty Baturay Özdemir took the floor and said “Our name is the ITU Maritime Faculty and our surname is our High Maritime School. We have been proud to be part of this great family since we made our first steps on the gangway. Our family tree is 131 years old with its roots growing down day by day.”

The ITU Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca started his speech by stating that the ITU Maritime Faculty has built a bridge between the past and the present by preserving the historical tradition. “We associate our present and future with you. Thanks to your efforts our faculty ranks the highest among the institutions offering the maritime education. Today we are here with our students and alumni. I’m very grateful to everyone. Thank you so much,” added Rector Karaca.

Binali Yıldırım: “I have always been proud to be part of ITU family.”

Finally, the Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication Binali Yıldırım delivered his speech stating that he had always been proud and delighted to be part of ITU and the Maritime Faculty family and admitted that every time he comes to the faculty, deep in his heart he feels that he belongs here.

At the end of the ceremony 40, 50 and 60 year alumni of the ITU Maritime Faculty were awarded with the plaques, and all the guests enjoyed the fish meal specially served at the university dining hall.
