The world’s first “Microtonal Guitar Orchestra” Project conducted by ITU TMSC Assoc. Prof. Tolgahan Çoğulu and University of Music Würzburg Prof. Jürgen Ruck will continue for three years. In the scope of the project, supported by German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), various German and Turkish composers will write compositions for the orchestra. The first concert given by the students of Würzburg University in the scope of the project was held at ITU TMSC. Apart from the concert, Prof. Jürgen Ruck gave a masterclass to the ITU TMSC students.
In 2016 “Microtonal Guitar Orchestra” is going to meet with composers from Germany, Spain and Turkey and play the compositions during the summer camp to be organized in 2017.
ITU TMSC Vice-Director of Musical Performance Assoc. Prof. Tolgahan Çoğulu in 2008 designed an Adjustible Microtonal Guitar that preserves the tone of the classical guitar. Due to this new design he won the 1st prize at the prestigious in the music world Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition at Georgia Tech.
The Microtonal Guitar enables a player to play maqam-based music, to play microtonal music of the contemporary classical Western music repertoire and to play pieces based on tunings other than the equal temperament system.
