Feb 16, 2016

A new exhbition of Turkish graphics designer Gürbüz Doğan Ekşioğlu named “Comma” opened on February, 11, Thursday at ITU Rectorate Art Gallery (ITU RAG).

The opening of the exhibition was attended by our Rector Prof. Mehmet Karaca, Vice-Rectors, Deans, famous artists, academicians, students as well as close friends of Gürbüz Doğan Ekşioğlu.

Our Rector Prof. Mehmet Karaca presented a plaque to the graphics designer Ekşioğlu. ITU TMSC students, who gave a live music performance at the opening event, were warmly welcomed by art-lovers.

ITU Supports Art

Our Rector Prof. Mehmet Karaca, who delivered a speech at the opening event, pointed out that “ITU has a very strong connection with art. The first Turkish Music Conservatory was opened at ITU. You all know how many students are educated there. Visial arts is a field that also attracts our attention. We are interested in various fields connected with architecture. Hosting this kind of art exhibitions at our university helps us to promote our name and encourage our students.”

Ekşioğlu, who is famous in Turkey and in the US for his ability to bring art and intelligence together, admitted that a university exhibition is a good idea. “I accepted the offer to exhibit my works at a specially designed exhibition area, a gallery located in the Rectorate Building made by Istanbul Technical University. I like the idea to have exhibitions and art galleries at universities. That’s an amazing idea as it contributes to a new understanding of a person’s profession irrespectively of his field of study”, said Ekşioğlu.

Graphic Design is Linked to Technology and Industry

Ekşioğlu emphasized the link between graphic design and industry by saying: “Graphic design will improve along with the development of industry and technology. Every product and business requires a name, a label, a package and a poster. Let me give you the example of the US – one person in America produces 25 kilos of rubbish with labels on it compared with 5 kilos per person in Turkey which means that American graphic design is much more developed. It is also well-developed in Turkey, but not as well in Africa and Asia. With continuos advancements development is inevitable.”
The exhibition will display close to 50 works of Ekşioğlu, who is famous in Turkey and in the US for his ability to bring art and intelligence together. The recent works of the artist including “paper, canvas, photography, digital printing and 3D” works will be exhibited at ITU RAG until March, 3.
The gallery is located on the İTÜ Ayazağa campus in Maslak, and can be visited by art lovers everyday between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
