ITU Women Share their Stories of Success

This year on the 8th of March, the International Women’s Day, ITU Rectorate in cooperation with Women’s Studies Center in Science, Engineering and Technology (ITU WSC in SET) are holding a panel discussion titled “ITU Women, Steps that Inspire”.
Four women-members of our academic staff, each of them having a story of success in various fields of academic research, will share their experience during the event. In addition, Assoc. Prof. Ayşegül Kostak Toksoy (zither), Assist. Prof. Sinem Özdemir (solo), Instructors Fidan Kurt Kasapbaşı (solo) and Mehru Ensari (piano) will brighten up the event by performing the compositions of women-composers.
Molecular Biology-Biotechnology and Genetics Research Centre Director and Molecular Biology and Genetics Department academic member Prof. Arzu Karabay Korkmaz, Computer Engineering Department Prof. Zehra Çataltepe, Environmental Engineering Department academic member Assoc. Prof. Didem Okutman Taş and Urban and Regional Planning Assoc. Prof. Zeynep Günay will share their experience of working in such male-dominated fields as science, engineering and technology during the panel discussion to be conducted by Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences Director and Management Engineering academic member Prof. Şebnem Burnaz.
The panel discussion is aimed at both drawing attention to the research studies of ITU women, who stand out for their success in the field of science, and inspire ITU female students as role models.
Concert: Compositions Written and Performed by Women
A concert of Turkish Classical and Western Music from the Romantic period and up to present time composed and performed by four women.
The concert will offer an opportunity to meet closely with the female composers of different periods and cultures introducing Neveser Kökdeş, a Turkish composer, Clara Schumann and Alma Mahler, two composers of Western romantic music, and a young modern Turkish composer Deniz Demirel.
ITU TMSC academic member Assist. Prof. Sinem Özdemir, performing the compositions of Neveser Kökdeş, will be accompanied by Assist. Prof. Ayşegül Kostak Toksoy playing the zither. ITU TMSC Teaching Assistant Fidan Kurt Kasapbaşı, performing the compositions of Clara Schumann, Alma Mahler and Duygu Deniz Demirel, will be accompanied by Teaching Assistant Mehru Ensari playing the piano.
The concert to be held on the occasion of 8 March International Women’s Day will take the audience on a journey to explore the magical world of women-composers.
