University Women’s Studies Centers Came Together at ITU

Held annually and this year hosted by ITU and Sabancı University, “III. Congress of National University Women’s Studies Centers” and “IX.Cooperation Against Sexual Harassment and Assault and Communication Network Workshop” was held on April 22, 2016 at ITU Suleyman Demirel Cultural Center.


Representatives from 28 universities and various civil society organizations participated in the congress which was on “gender courses at universities”. Prof. Dr. Fatma Arslan, the Director of ITU BMT-KAUM and Prof. Dr. Sondan Durukanoğlu Feyiz, the Vice-Rector of Sabancı University made the opening speeches of the congress, and Prof. Dr. Yıldız Ecevit, the Head of ODTU Gender and Women’s Studies Department participated in the congress as the guest speaker.

Yıldız Ecevit stated that the main function of the Women’s Centers is doing research, and in her speech she also addressed the importance of introducing the centers in universities. She mentioned that Gender Equality Courses should be given greater importance and she also presented her suggestions on it.


The problem arising by encouraging elective or compulsory gender equality courses in universities were discussed in the workshop. In line with the guidelines adopted by the universities Senates, the things to be done were discussed.

In this sense, ITU in 2014 served as a model university by agreeing “Sexual Harassment and Anti-discrimination Guidelines”. Also, ITU BMT-KAUM created a digital achieve comprised of all events held for sexual harassment and adopted policy documents and guidelines and this archive was also introduced in this workshop.
