Deep Pride for the Nobel Prize Winner at ITU
May 20, 2016

We welcomed Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar, the owner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, in the event held on May 20, 2016 in Suleyman Demirel Cultural Center (SDKM) at Ayazağa Campus. In the event that Prof. Dr. Davut Kavranoğlu, Chief Advisor to the President in Charge of the Universities, and our rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca made a speech, Sancar made a scientific presentation titled “Nobel Talk by Aziz Sancar” on his research won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and he gave his recommendations to the academicians and students from ITU for the path to success.

Visiting ITU Technocity before his speech, Prof. Dr. Sancar attended the lunch that our Rector gave in honor of him. Touring the campus after lunch, Sancar went to SDKM to meet the academicians and students.

In his speech, giving clues about both the features of an internationally successful person and an academician winning a Nobel Prize, Prof. Dr. Sancar answered those who wonder the secret of success with two words: “Working hard”. To give an example, he stated that he worked for 18 hours a day during his PhD studies and he usually spent the nights in the laboratory.

While discussing in his talk how the scientific developments have proceeded in the world and in Turkey, he underlined the point that Turkey has become a country where research can be done easily compared to Turkey in the years when he decided to leave in order to continue his academic studies easier. Considering working for our country as a national service and telling that “Nobel Prize is not for me, but it belongs to the Republic of Turkey.”, Sancar emphasized that a person wanting to be successful should aim “to be the best in the field he works.” Our Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca presented “ITU Plaque of Memory” to Aziz Sancar after his speech.

Our graduate from ITU Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering in 1984, Prof. Dr. Davut Kavranoğlu, Chief Advisor to the President emphasized that this Prize with a worldwide significance will be a great source of motivation for the academicians and the students they trained and this prize also will provide a perspective for the universities in Turkey to rise in the world rankings. Kavranoğlu stated that this event indicated people in Turkey can be awarded Nobel Prize in the field of science. He also added that the gap between Turkey and other countries is gradually closing with scientific studies and he presented his thanks to Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar telling that he filled our country with pride.

In his speech, our Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca stated that “To remember ourselves and our potential, we need unforgettable moments and historical achievements from which we will gain power when we are in need.” He added that “Awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Mr. Sancar gave “an inspiring success to today and even to the future” as a gift.”
The event ended with a significant opening. The exhibition “Three Headmasters of Engineering School”, the third exhibition of “History Serial” of ITU RSG was held by the participation of Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar.

We congratulate Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar filling us with deep pride, especially the academic community and the university students, with his 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and we wish him a continued success.
