Celebrating 243rd Anniversary of ITU

A splendid celebration to mark the 243rd anniversary of ITU, which step-by-step draws us closer to the age of 250, was held on Friday 27 May, 2016 at Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center in Ayazağa Campus.

We were very glad to present Golden Bee Award to people and organizations who made their contribution to our university and award plaques to ITU members who made successful careers thanks to ITU and completed 60 and more years in their working life. We were also delighted to witness exciting and incredible feelings experienced by all ITU members reuniting after so many years on this significant day.

Our Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca in his opening speech at the Golden Bee Ceremony indicated that our present success in academic, sports and cultural fields is largely based on 243 year long experience of our university. The Rector highlighted that a feeling of being united as members of ITU gives a special value and is a common identity; and at the same time the synergy generated by this shared value might be the greatest source of motivation nourishing our university. In his speech our Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca emphasized that it is the bridge between hearts that allowed to hold this event at ITU by stressing that the notion of “being a member of ITU” is a power uniting so many different people regardless of their city, country and academic field.

Prof. Dr. Karaca reminded that many projects were implemented and planned under his presidency and disclosed his long-term goal to become a ‘university of the 3rd generation’ by the time of the fourh industrial revolution is introduced to engineering and technology by launching the 250th anniversary movement with the support of our students, alumni and academicians in the short run and developing the means of production of the information age. The road to achieve this goal goes through the necessity to expand partnership relations and become an innovative university engaging in technological entrepreneurship and constantly updating the learning content, added our Rector.

Rector Karaca thanked Naval Architecture and Ocean Faculty alumnus and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, Civil Engineering Faculty alumnus and Minister of Forest and Water Affairs Prof. Dr. Veysel Eroğlu and Civil Engineering Faculty alumnus, former Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and former Minister of Development and Housing Recai Kutan, who in accordance with the decision of the Senate of our university are to be granted Golden Bee Award for the contribution they made to our university and the identity of being a member of ITU and concluded his speech by saying, “Happy 243rd Anniversary of our university and ITU’s Day”.

Message to ITU Members from Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım


Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, who could not attend the ceremony due to his busy schedule, reminded being an ITU student long ago in the message addressed to the ITU members. The Prime Minister stressed that our university used to play a leading role in the Ottoman Empire and stated his belief in the fact that it would also help to build a future of our country. By emphasizing the importance of universal knowledge and value created by ITU in a liberal atmosphere Binali Yıldırım also stressed the significance of bringing up qualified scientists for the rapid advancement and development of Turkey and added that universities play a crucial role at this point. Our Prime Minister, who shared his pride to be awarded with the Golden Bee Award with ITU members in his message, conveyed his thanks to his friend in the first place our Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca, the university senate, our academic and administrative staff members who granted him the award.

Awards to Those Who Made Their Contribution to ITU

The following part of the ceremony was devoted to the presentation of Gold and Silver Bee awards to people and organizations making significant contribution to ITU. The awards were granted to the individuals who made their valuable contributions in various ways including raising the recognition of ITU abroad technically and economically with its significant national and international studies as well as developing art and social activities in the university, expanding the physical facilities and supporting academic staff and students. ITU’77 Naval Architecture and Ocean Faculty alumnus and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, ITU’71 Civil Engineering Faculty alumnus and Minister of Forest and Water Affairs Prof. Dr. Veysel Eroğlu and ITU’52 Civil Engineering Faculty alumnus, former Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and former Minister of Development and Housing Recai Kutan were awarded with the Golden Bee Award. Among the organizations winning the Golden Bee Award were Barsan Global Logistics, Chevron International Co. Ltd., Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, İTÜ Foundation, Makyol Cons. Ind. Tur. and Trade Inc., Turkish State Railways İstanbul 1st Regional Directorate, and Construction Center Corporate Group.

Such organizations as Arı Teknokent Project Development Planning Corp., Aslı Börek, Barcelona Sport Club, Birkökler Foundation and Modern Life Support Association were presented with the Silver Bee Award.

The ceremony also featured a special interview titled “Being a Member of ITU” given by a pride of our country 2015 Chemistry Nobel Prize Winner Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar.

The Golden Bee Awards Ceremony was followed by an outstanding musical concert performed for our alumni by Dilek Türkan who was accompanied by ITU Orchestra conducted by Oğuzhan Balcı. A lot of people, whose life used to be connected with ITU, reuniting on this wonderful evening fulfilled their longing and experienced emotional moments while recollecting their student years. Our alumni, who after so many years still feel proud of being a member of ITU, shared the most successful moments they experienced in their career and personal life. We witnessed some exciting and emotional scenes lived by our university alumni on ITU Day who once more realized that their freindship ties became even stronger with time. Some of the alumni who hadn’t had a chance to see each other for a long time for various reasons finally reunited and parted promising each other to meet again.
