Little Ones’ First Step towards Architecture
Jun 07, 2016

Wouldn’t it be nice that your children get familiar with professions right now through fun and creative games? We thought it would and started working on it. In collaboration with ITU GVO Sedat Üründül Kindergarten and ITU Faculty of Architecture, the Design Festival was organized between May 23-27 under the coordination of Sultan Polat and Assoc. Prof. Aliye Ahu Akgün, and as a result, the little ITU members met with architecture.

The organization was conducted with the supports of Prof. Sinan Mert, Dean of Faculty of Architecture, and Assoc. Prof. Özhan Ertekin, Vice-Dean. The Faculty of Architecture has five departments, namely the Department of Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, Industrial Design and Landscape Architecture. Thanks to this special organization, the little students had the chance to examine architecture that combines creativity with technical information. Kindergarten students made their first architectural design by using waste and other materials with the help of wooden cubes sized 20x20x20cm. that we prepared specifically for them in our wood shop in Taşkışla campus.

The excitement of the little ones while exploring the secrets of architecture and learning through fun was obvious and some interesting comments about their journey of discovery were also encountered. Students aged 4 defined the concept “design” as “think first, make later” , students aged 5 called “landscape architecture” as “being florist” and aged 6 called “neighborhood” as “village”. Their comments made us smile.
At the end of this important Festival, the Director of ITU GVO Sedat Üründül Kindergarten, Nur Aköz, presented certificates of appreciation as a token to all academicians and volunteers.
