ITU BİSTEM education session known internationally as “STEAM” (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) education for primary and secondary school students took place on 13-14 June 2016 at Ayazağa Campus.

Apart from students of Ayazağa Secondary School students from 7 secondary and 1 primary schools in Istanbul were invited to the introductory session. While ITU volunteer students took part in the session as instructors, İTAP, a non-governmental organization, provided support by developing the scientific content and educating the instructors.

Students taking in the experiments under the supervision of instructors were given the certificates by ITU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Ali Fuat Aydın at the end of the first day and received the certificates from ITU Secretary General Prof. Dr. Tayfun Kındap at the end of the second day. The students, who were very excited to take part in scientific experiments conducted in the entertaining educational atmosphere, had a chance to learn more about our university while walking around our campus after getting their certificates.

Due to the BİSTEM/STEAM educational sessions, organinzed by ITU Rectorate Social Projects with the purpose to enhance the interaction between the university and society, our university has an opportunity to share its scentific knowledge with the society members and contributes to raising children as independent individuals intrested in research, producing works of science and art who will make the history of our country.

After the introductory sessions ITU BİSTEM/STEAM education runs programs, prepared in line with the group meetings, workshops, analysis and reports, for primary and secondary school students and teachers, primarily focusing on schools in need of social and economic support.

BİSTEM education is aimed to boost children’s interest in science and give them necessary experience, increase their academic success thus preparing them for a better future; it provides certificate programs for teachers, supports their professional development and makes lessons more efficient.

BİSTEM education, developed by ITU and now being in its initial stage, exists abroad under different names with a different curriculum. The most widespread in our country is FenLab and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) or STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) known internationally.

One of the STEM sessions called “Girls in STEM (GIS) Project” has been held in our university under the support of our Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry Laureate Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar.
