Miletos R&D Reveals The Unknown
Sep 07, 2016

Miletos Research and Development (R&D) is a recent example of the entrepreneurial spirit cultivated at ITU ARI Teknokent, the home of new ideas and university-industry co-operation. Miletos, an R&D-based artificial intelligence company, has shown a considerable progress since its establishment in 2014, and the efforts of the company concentrating on Optical Character Recognition (OCR) have recently yielded fruits in this area.

Established in ITU ARI Teknokent in 2014, Miletos demonstrated breakthrough performance in ImageNet Challenge 2015 Competition that was organized by Stanford University. Joining the competition in the category of object recognition, Miletos took third place with 89% accuracy rate, while Microsoft won the first place with 96%, and Google came second with %95.

In the ensuing projects, the company implemented online handwriting recognition feature for Turkish. This innovation, which has proven to be a very effective technology for machine recognition of Turkish bank checks and invoices, paves the way for a separate OCR system providing capability for check-invoice recognition. This development will significantly benefit financial institutions such as banks and factoring firms that process a large volume of commercial checks. Also, Miletos Check Recognition System will be the first and only OCR software capable of automatic recognition of checks in Turkish banks.

Another project that Miletos Research and Development has been working on is the Ottoman Optical Character Recognition system that works online. The system, which will enable searching, classifying, and even summarizing the documents in Ottoman language, will be compatible with other software applications. Customized for Ottoman Turkish, this software will be the first of its kind in the world.
