White Voyage Cooperation between PolRec and Bulgaria
Oct 04, 2016

While your memories of this summer’s blue voyage might still be fresh and fragrant, ITU Polar Research Centre (PolReC) has started planning for next term’s white voyage. A team from PolRec attended the Balkan meeting of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) held in Kircaali, Bulgaria, on 1-2 October, to deliver four presentations on their polar research background and future projects. What makes this international event particularly significant for PolReC is that the Centre signed a cooperation agreement with Bulgarian Antarctic Institute (BAI).

Like Turkey, polar activities of BAI in Antarctica date back to 1967, and since then, the Institute has accumulated extensive experience and expertise in this area. The agreement signed with BAI lays the official groundwork for joint activities to be carried out in the future by Turkish and Bulgarian research institutions working on Antarctica. In accordance with the agreement, two Turkish researchers will accompany the BAI team in their 25th Bulgaria Expedition to Antarctica, to take place in 2016-2017 term, and will expand their knowledge of the field. To select the Turkish researchers who will participate in the expedition, ITU PolReC will post a call for applications via its website.

Hasan Aziz, the Mayor of Kircaali, and Bulgarian MP Boris Stanimirov were also present at the meeting, while Gerlis Fugmann, Director of APECS, attended via teleconference and wished success to the participating countries, which were Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece, in their future research.
