Oct 19, 2016

ITU Satellite Team APIS, renowned for its international achievements, represented Turkey in “Cansat International Competition 2016”, which was held in Ulanbataar, the capital of Mongolia. We are proud that APIS won the competition where the best teams of Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO) member countries competed.

ITU team, supervised by Prof. Alim Rüstem Aslan of the Astronautical Engineering Department, included Mert Menekse, Gürkan Önal and Ataberk Arman Kayhan, who are students at the same department.

This year’s Cansat International Competition was jointly organized by the APSCO Secretariat and Information Technology Post and Telecommunications Authority (ITPTA), the government of Mongolia. Competition mission involved the mock-up satellite (Cansat), placed on a rocket launch ramp, detecting a 50-meter-target by using video or photos. Prerequisite to the accomplishment of the mission was real-time transmission to the ground station of the satellite’s temperature, pressure, wind speed, GPS data, moisture level, altitude, three-axis accelerometer and three-axis gyroscope data, and camera angle.

APIS team was the highest performing Turkish team by earning the 9th rank in the NASA sponsored Cansat 2016, which was held in the USA, in June 2016. By winning the first place in Ulanbatoor competition, APIS has furthered its achievements.

On behalf of ITU Family, we congratulate APIS team and the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics, whose support for the team is worthy of admiration.
