UAVs Raced, ITU Teams Won The Awards

Two ITU teams won first place in two different categories of the International Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) Competition organized by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). In the competition that took place in Gebze Technical University (GTU), 100 Turkish and 6 international teams competed in order to demonstrate the utility of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) they designed for civilian applications, particularly in the applications intended to help people in emergencies.

ITU ROTA Team, brought together from among Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics students with the aim of conducting research on UAVs and entering TUBITAK’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Competition, attained the top place in its first competition. The team won first place in “Fixed Wings Aerial Vehicle” category with its vehicle named “Albatros”, named after the albatross bird, which is known for having the longest wingspan of any extant birds. Another ITU team, Mini Quad, took first place in “Rotary Wings Aerial Vehicle” category, beating out many other competitors.

ITU ROTA Team, supervised by Assist. Prof. Özge Özdemir of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering, consists of junior students from the department. Tunahan Ulu is the team leader, and other team members are Batuhan Makaracı, Furkan Mustafa Gedik, Kamer Erol, Ahmed Selman Koçoglu, and Mustafa Musab Ayhan. ITU Team Mini Quad member Ersin Gürel, an MS student at Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering Graduate Program, was supervised by Ibrahim Tugrul Ardıç, research assistant at the Department of Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering.

In the “Fixed Wing” category where ITU ROTA Team came first, Polish Air Forces Academy Team came second while Team Bilkent of Bilkent University took third place. In the “Rotary Wheel” category of the competition, “Team Tophane” of Tophane Vocational and Technical Anatolian School won second place, and “Cyprus Eagles” from European University of Lefke took third place.
