132th Anniversary of Marine Education in Turkey Celebrated at Our Faculty

Maritime Faculty and ITU Maritime Faculty Alumni Association jointly organized the 132th Alumni Homecoming Day, celebrated every year with a lunch that is known as Traditional Fish Day. The event that took place on December 3rd was also an opportunity to celebrate the 132th anniversary of Turkish maritime education and 24th anniversary of Maritime Faculty. The alumni who came together on that special day remembered the good old memories and enjoyed the lunch. The celebration was enlivened by the performance of a drum band.

Among those who attended the event were Prof. Mehmet Karaca, ITU Rector; Ahmet Arslan, Turkish Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication; Prof. Abdi Kükner, Dean of Maritime Faculty; and Baybora Yıldırım, President of ITU Maritime Faculty Alumni Association. Before the celebration, Minister Ahmet Arslan visited the photography exhibition on Turkish Antarctic Research Expedition of which ITU Polar Research Center (ITU PolRec) was one of the participants.

Maritime Faculty is to acquire its internship vessel

Minister Arslan, who is a graduate of ITU Maritime Faculty, expressed in his speech his pleasure at meeting with his friends on such a meaningful day. Arslan emphasized the importance of having a simulation centre and stated that they will soon take steps to provide Maritime Faculty, which has multiple simulation centres, with an internship vessel. According to Arslan, such a service would be a significant benefit to young people in maritime education and all responsible parties are making efforts to improve educational standards of maritime students. Mentioning in his speech ITU PolReC, one of the Turkish teams representing Turkey in a recent expedition to Antarctica, Arslan congratulated ITU Rector Prof. Karaca and all those involved in expedition process for PolRec’s success.

ITU Rector Prof. Karaca: “Facilities of the faculty will be improved.”

Prof. Karaca emphasized in his speech the importance of Maritime Faculty for ITU and stated that facilities of the faculty will be improved with the support of the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication. Following Prof. Karaca’s speech, Prof. Abdi Kükner, the Dean of Maritime Faculty, and Captain Baybora, the President of ITU Maritime Faculty Alumni Association addressed the alumni.

After alumni members who celebrated their 40th, 50th, and 60th anniversary were given the plaques, the event ended with a lunch featuring a special fish menu in Maritime Faculty’s cafeteria.
