Signed for The New ITU-TRNC Erenköy Campus

For the leasing of the parcels in the land of Erenköy Campus, on Tuesday, November 29, a lease agreement was signed in the Meeting Hall of the TRNC Prime Ministry and Ministry of Finance. As a “witness of honor”, Serdar Denktaş, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance of the TRNC, signed the lease agreement which was signed between Prof. Dr. Ercan Kahya, the Rector of ITU-TRNC Education Research Campuses and Eralp Münür Pınar, the head of the TRNC State Property and Materials Office. As contracted, the parcels of state and treasury lands in Yeni Erenköy have been rented to ITU-TRNC Education Research Campuses by State Property and Materials Office for 49 years with the purpose of establishing the main campus.

Prof. Dr. Ercan Kahya, the Rector of ITU-TRNC, stated that this project will be the biggest investment after the water supply project accomplished by Turkey in the TRNC and he also said that 6 lands of state and treasury and 2 parcels belonging to Foundations are rented from the TRNC State Property and Materials Office. Reminding that 23 parcels belonging to nearly 60 people were expropriated, the Rector added that the works with 6 year-effort were realized so today has an historical importance. With this agreement, the architectural design and construction phrases for Yeni Erenköy land are expected to start as soon as possible. The studies of numerical mapping, geological site investigation and urban planning were completed for Yeni Erenköy land in 2013.

The campus with the capacity of approximately 6000 students will include the buildings for marine sciences, engineering, social sciences departments and graduate programs along with natural parks and social and cultural areas. Some certain thematic areas will be used as the base of international R&D and innovation. Serdar Denktaş, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance of the TRNC, shared his ideas on this development by these words: “The universities play an important role in regional development planning. The future scientific, social, cultural and economic contributions of ITU to the region will make a big change in the TRNC and I believe that the leased lands will be used in the most efficient way.”
