Eco-friendly Campuses Were at Our University

Universities are not only the institutions providing higher education but also the areas of social life where youth establish a permanent bond with their environment. For this reason, many universities give importance to landscaping and try to create eco-friendly and breathable campuses in which facilities will be utilized in the best way. In this context, conducting projects within “Green Campus” project since 2013; our university hosted 3rd National Environmental Centers Meeting organized by Environment and Urban Planning Application and Research Center on December 1. The event with a theme of “Green Campus” was held with the participation of 8 environmental centers.

The meeting in Ayazağa campus started by the promotion of the center and the speech of Prof. Dr. Hayriye Eşbah, the Head of ITU Environment and Urban Planning Application and Research Center, on the theme of the meeting. Following this, our sample Green Campus project, which is pioneered by our university, was described in detail to the participants in the presentation made by our Vice-Rector, Prof. Dr. Tayfun Kindap, and also the support given for project works by our Rectorate was explained in this presentation. The invited speaker of the meeting Dr. Duygu Erten, from TURKECO Construction and Energy Company, explained their works by examples on certification of Green Campuses. With his presentation titled “Green University and Ege University”, Prof. Dr. Nuri Azbar, the head of Environmental Problems Application and Research Center at Ege University; with her presentation titled “The Projects Designed for DAE Tınaztepe Campus”, Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Pala, the head of Environmental Research and Application Center (ÇEVMER) at Dokuz Eylül University; with his presentation titled “Bicycle-friendly Campuses”, Assist. Prof. Metin Çalık, the authority of Environmental Problems Application and Research Center at Dumlupınar University and with her presentation titled “Özyeğin Campus”, a senior architect Yasemin Somuncu, the authority of Environment and Economy Center at Özyeğin University addressed to the participants in the meeting.

Among the participants were also Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Cengiz, the head of Architecture, Urban Planning and Design Application and Research Center at Istanbul Gedik University; Assist. Prof. İlknur Şentürk, the head of Environmental Problems Application and Research Center at Cumhuriyet University and Semih Kelleci, a research assistant in City, District, Environmental Application and Research Center at Çankaya University.
