Prof Dr. Zeynep Ahunbay Granted the Vehbi Koç Award

The Vehbi Koç Award is an given by the Vehbi Koç Foundation to people and institutions that provide services or contribute to the benefit of our country in order to reward services that are exemplary and of collective value; this year’s winner was ITU Department of Architecture Professor Emeritus, Dr. Zeynep Ahunbay. Our retired academic, was chosen by the Board of Directors of the Vehbi Koç Foundation amongst three candidates that were nominated by Selection Committee of leading scientists and experts, giving her a $100,000 cash prize. Dr Ahunbay received the award from Koç Holding Chairman Ömer Koç and Koç Holding Honorary President Rahmi Koç.

We congratulate Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ahunbay on winning one of Turkey's most prestigious awards and bringing this happy news to our university; we wish her continued success.


Who is Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ahunbay?

Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ahunbay, who graduated from the Faculty of Architecture in 1970 as a "certified architectural engineer" started to work as a "research assistant" in the History of Architecture and Restoration Department of the Faculty of Architecture in 1971.
In 1975, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Doğan Kuban, she was granted a doctorate degree with her PhD study titled "The Sultan Ahmed Complex in Ottoman Architecture and After, 1609-1690"
Dr. Ahunbay, who completed her master's degree education in 1977-78 at the Institute of Advanced Architecture Studies of the University of York, went on to demonstrate her success as an "associate professor" with her thesis titled “The Madrasahs of Istanbul: An Evaluation in Conservation and Reuse" in 1980. Our Emeritus Professor continues her work with the protection of the Haghia Sophia Museum and recovery efforts in Hasankeyf.
