Orkun Zafer Özgelen's Important Success in Classical Music

The National Composition Contest organized by the Kadıköy Municipality Süreyya Opera where composers under 36 years old compete under the "suite for chamber orchestra" section, wrapped up with a final concert that was held on the evening of March 6th. Orkun Zafer Özgelen from the ITU Turkish Music State Conservatory (İTÜ TMDK) shared his Jury Encouragement Award with Uğur Çerkezoğlu. Cem Oslu, known for his film music credits, was the winner of the contest, while Orhan Veli Özbey was the second place winner and Ahmet Tamer Topuz was third; Kandemir Ayrtun Hoinic got an honorable mention.


In the final day of the event, the Presidential Symphony Orchestra and the Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra General Music Director Gürer Aykal played 6 of 19 pieces that the judges deemed worthy of entering the competition. Following the concert where the pieces echoed in the Süreyya Opera House, the jury composed of Yalçın Tura, Turgay Erdener, Hasan Uçarsu, Oguzhan Balcı, Rengim Gökmen and Gürer Aykal evaluated the opuses.


There was also a vote among the audience. Cem Oslu was judged to be the winner in both jury and audience voting, ITU TMDK academic Orkun Zafer Özgelen was awarded the Jury Encouragement Award for his piece, “Hayal Perdesi Suite”. The Kadikoy Municipality announced that the award winning pieces in the competition will be made into an album.
