Within the scope of the Women of the Year awards organized by the Antalya Business Women's Association (ANTİKAD) every year on March 8th for International Women's Day, our faculty member from the Department of Chemical Engineering Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elif Genceli Güner was selected as "Academic of the Year". Dr. Güner was deemed worthy due to her discovery of two new minerals on the Antarctic continent. Gülçin Güloğlu, who employs women who have been the victims of violence in her factory received the "Entrepreneur Businesswoman of the Year" award at the event while Server Sevinç received the "Mother of the Year" reward for helping her drug-addicted son rejoice in life once again.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elif Genceli Güner: "It is possible to save 90% of water."

“Academician of the Year” award winner Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elif Genceli Güner stated that she ended up being a scientist even though she had different dreams for herself as a child. Dr. Güner, who has been a scholar in the Netherlands for many years and accomplished many important discoveries, explained that only 4% of the world's water resources are drinkable and that her project on the process of recycling clean water was in response to these resources rapidly becoming polluted. Recalling that wastewater is one of the most polluting factors of water resources, our academic emphasized the fact that it is possible to recycle, thus save, as much water as there is in Aral Lake, every year. Thanks to Dr. Güner’s new technology developed in the Netherlands, ice crystals are produced after wastewater is cooled by the eutectic crystallization method in a reactor. She shared the details of the study with the following words: “When we come to the point of intersection of salt and ice and take the mixture in the system, ice and salt crystals are separated like when we add sugar to tea and it sinks to the bottom. This way, we can save up to 90% of energy and we can recover 100% of salt with efficient water."
