The Renovated Garment Room Will Ensure the Memory of İrem Vardar Lives On

As a project of the ITU Foundation Social and Cultural Services Committee, the Garment Room started to serve students in need 10 years ago, providing them with clothing, shoes etc. with the donations of many company and graduates. The Room, which has undertaken an important social responsibility role at our university since 2007, has been renovated with the support of Prof. Dr. Mahir Vardar, in honor of his late wife İrem Vardar’s efforts as a committee member in the establishment of the project. The opening ceremony for the newly renovated room was held at the Ayazağa Campus with Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca, Prof. Dr. Prof. Mahir Vardar, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Telem Gök Sadıkoğlu, academics, students, and ITU Foundation employees in attendance.

Speaking at the opening, our Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca reminded everyone that the Garment Room is an important support offered to students. After thanking those who contributed to the survival and renewal of such a valuable project, Dr. Karaca, honored the life of İrem Vardar, in memoriam, by reminiscing about her work. The Rector thanked Prof. Dr. Mahir Vardar for his efforts and added that such services would continue; Dr. Vardar is a retired faculty member of the Department of Geological Engineering, a multi-faceted academic, an engineer, an architect, and an artist.

Dr. Mahir Vardar, who facilitated the renovation of the Garment Room, upon completion of the work, noted that Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca had provided great support for them and that our university being an educational institution attached to its traditions also played a role in this. Dr. Vardar concluded his speech by saying that it is very important to be able to move the values into the future without losing them.

The Garment Room is open Mondays and Thursdays from 11.00 to 15.00 in the Central Classes Building located on the Ayazağa Campus.
