Architectural Designs of the Future Made Their Mark at Caadfutures 2017
Jul 18, 2017

Our university hosted the 2017 Conference on the Future of Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAADFutures 2017), which was organized by the Faculty of Architecture.

ITU continues to host international scientific meetings. Our faculty members and students from the Faculty of Architecture invited the CAADFutures conference to Turkey, considered one of the most prestigious meetings in its field. The 17th conference was held July 12-14, 2017 at the ITU Faculty of Architecture in Taşkışla with the theme "Future Orbitals of Computational Design". A large number of invited scientists attended the conference, which was held under the co-chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Gülen Çağdaş and Prof. Dr. Mine Özkar, faculty members of the Faculty of Architecture.

Held for the first time in Turkey

Faculty of Architecture faculty member Prof. Dr. Gülen Çağdaş provided information about the importance of the conference. Prof. Dr. Gülen Çağdaş said "CAADFutures is held every 2 years. It has been organized 16 times in various countries of the world. At the last conference in Brazil in 2015, 3 PhD students from the Architectural Design Information Graduate Program from the FBE Informatics Department successfully represented our university and presented our bid to host the 2017 Conference at ITU. With applause, it was decided that the next conference would be held at the ITU Taşkışla Campus in Istanbul. This made us very proud.”

Future trajectories of computational design

Prof. Dr. Gulen Çağdaş, who started by stating that ITU has successfully authored the first studies of technology in architecture design in Turkey continued her words with:

"The use of technology and computers has become inevitable, especially in architectural design. ITU is one of the first universities to incorporate the computer design process into research in master’s, and doctoral programs. With our large and experienced cadres, we offer a very good education to our students. We enrich our education with events and conferences. The CAADFutures Conference is also an important platform where predictions of what future trajectories of computational design might be like."

Visibility enhancing approaches

Prof. Dr. Mine Özkar, who attended the event with her Ph.D. student, shared her work on computation-assisted approaches in architectural design education with attendees at the meeting stating:

"Our work addresses design technologies not only technically but also socially, and emphasizes the visibility of design-manufacturing processes as tools that can increase accountability among stakeholders."

Our faculty took on editorial duties

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Leman Figen Gül highlighted the importance of compiling the conference proceedings in book form for the scientific community. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gül also added that select conference papers, pending approval by an international review committee, would be published in the CCIS series of Springer Publishing House, known for its reputation in informatics and information technology. Editorship duties of the book have been assumed by Prof. Dr. Gülen Çağdaş, Prof. Dr. Mine Özkar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Leman Figen Gül and Dr. Ethem Gürer.
