Our faculty members who were deemed worthy of the "TUBA Outstanding Successful Young Scientist Award Program" (GEBIP) awards, Professor Dr. Elif Sertel, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ertuğrul Başar, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oguz Hakan Göğüş, were presented with their awards by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The Academy of Sciences of Turkey (TUBA), Outstanding Young Scientist (GEBIP), Scientific Copyright Author (TESEP) and the International Academy Awards, supported by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, were presented to the award-winners at a ceremony held at the Presidential Complex. A large number of guests attended the ceremony, including our Rector, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaca, and 39 young scientists, among them, Prof. Dr. Elif Sertel, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ertuğrul Başar and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuz Hakan Göğüş.

President Erdoğan: "They contribute to our scientific knowledge"

Congratulating all the scientists who were awarded, Erdoğan notednthe names of the scientists who were being recognized. Erdoğan stated that 39 young scientists from different universities, assistant professors and associate professors from various branches were being recognized. Erdogan stated "In addition to Ankara and Istanbul, from Erzurum to Izmir, from Antalya to Zonguldak to all of our cities, I am delighted to see you on the list.” President Erdoğan then presented awards of the members of our faculty who have contributed to our country’s scientific knowledge through their research in the fields of nature, engineering, health, and social sciences, namely, Prof. Dr. Elif Sertel, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ertuğrul Başar and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuz Hakan Göğüş.

You must have a good grasp of the history of science

Science, Industry and Technology Minister Faruk Özlü, stated that in the field of science, the greatest element of building self-confidence is history. Since science is dominated by history, he said a good grasp of scientific history, leads to a better understanding of what one should do today and in the future.

Our Young Scientists’ Award-Winning Studies

Among the academics studies that have garnered Faculty of Civil Engineering, Department of Geomatics Engineering faculty, Prof. Dr. Elif Sertel her TUBA-GEBIP award are remote sensing, geo-statistics, geometric transformations, accuracy analysis, climate-land surface relations, land cover/use change,
climatic effect of land surface changes, regional climate modeling, natural disasters, geographic information systems, meteorological remote sensing, environmental and remote sensing, agriculture and remote sensing, agricultural areas and product types.

Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ertuğrul Başar has received international awards for MIMO systems, index modulation and wave form design for next generation (5G and beyond) wireless communication systems. He was the recipient of the ITU Best Doctoral Thesis Prize in 2013. With over 60 publications in prestigious international journals and conferences, Dr. Başar also has two international patent applications that are in the evaluation stages. He is an IEEE Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Dr. Başar is currently co-editor of IEEE Communications Letters, IEEE Access, and Physical Communication (Elsevier) magazines.

From our faculty members of the Eurasian Institute for Earth Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuz Hakan Göğüş’ early study areas, comes our understanding of the development mechanisms of the earth and other planets with the help of 2D and 3D geodynamic modeling. He compares the model results with geological, geophysical and petrological data and tries to come up with approaches to help increase our understanding of the physical development of high mountains (Anatolian Plate and Carpathians) and the formation of the rift basins in the Mediterranean (Aegean and Tyrrhenian Sea). Göğüş has published his works in high impact magazines such as Nature Communications and Geology. He is also a member of the editorial board of Tectonics magazine published by the American Geophysicists Association (AGU).

TUBA 2017 GEBİP Awards

The TUBA- GEBIP Awards were created in 2001 to recognize outstanding achievements of young scientists in the fields of Nature, Engineering, Health Sciences, to encourage them to pursue scientific studies in Turkey, to create their own work groups, and increase Turkish participation in internationally qualified projects and publications. Within the scope of the original and high-demand program, the award-recipients are provided with financial support of 20 thousand pounds each year for 3 years, additional support of 6 thousand pounds each year is given to doctoral students at the thesis level, and members of the academy are also given consultation services.
